There are several factors that contribute to our eyes adapting to darkness.
The three main players in dark adaptation are the pupil, the cone cells, and the rod cells.
The pupil's contribution to dark adaptation takes only a few seconds to a minute to be completed.
The sensitivity of the rod pathway improves considerably within 5–10 minutes in the dark.
Cone cells take about 10 minutes to adapt to the dark.
Rods, whose photopigments regenerate more slowly, do not reach their maximum sensitivity for about half an hour.
